SCHOTT TOPPAC® and Functional Labels: A Perfect Fit

As leading partners of the pharma and biotech industry, SCHOTT Pharma, specialist for drug containment and delivery solutions for the pharma industry, and Schreiner MediPharm, specialist for innovative functional labels, have pooled their expertise. Our objective is the development of solution concepts enabling a wide use of polymer syringes.

Prefillable syringes made of high-quality COC polymer materials such as SCHOTT TOPPAC® offer advantages, such as breakage resistance, lower weight, less protein adsorption and design flexibility. But they also have certain limitations with regard to an oxygen barrier and UV/light protection. However, these properties are of fundamental importance for sensitive substances such as biologics/biosimilars, cell and gene therapies or mRNA-based vaccines and medications.

Functional labels can make an important contribution here. Based on extensive tests, a large number of functional label designs were developed that can compensate the specific properties of polymer against glass. Market trends such as cryogenic applications, sustainability and digitalization were also addressed. All solutions are adapted precisely to the respective application. They are focused on product and patient safety, and easy integration into the pharmaceutical production process.

Low Migration

Specially developed functional labels for COC syringes can minimize the risk of migration. Thanks to pre-tested adhesives, materials and ink colors as well as extensive tests in combination with the SCHOTT TOPPAC® syringe, pre-qualified concepts are available that can be adapted to individual customer requirements. In addition, high-precision graduations integrated into the label enable exact dosing of the injection.

Light Protection

Reliable light protection is particularly challenging in case of prefilled syringes. Schreiner MediPharm's broad portfolio of functional labels with light protection enables efficient, multi-level UV and light protection for SCHOTT TOPPAC®. Thanks to an integrated inspection window, the syringe contents can be checked in their original color. Features such as first-opening indication and detachable documentation parts can also be integrated.

Cryo Applications

For sensitive substances that are stored and transported at low sub-zero temperatures, Schreiner MediPharm developed deep-freeze labels that reliably adhere to SCHOTT TOPPAC® freeze syringes. In addition, the labels can be equipped with a variety of UV and light protection levels. Moreover, additional functionalities can be integrated into the Freeze-Light-Protect labels such as documentation labels, inspection windows for checking the syringe content and a graduation.

First-opening Indication and Gas Barrier

Special functional labels from Schreiner MediPharm combine first-opening indication with a gas barrier. Thanks to the specific material selection and label design, oxygen diffusion in SCHOTT TOPPAC® syringes can be significantly reduced. The Syringe-Closure-Wrap label encloses the syringe body and the cap and is sealed at the upper end. Thus, in addition to an irreversible first-opening indication, it provides an enhanced barrier function. Since the label seals the syringe until the final use, the usual blister pack can be avoided.

First-opening Indication and Sustainable Supply Chain

Schreiner MediPharm's Cap-Lock Label wraps around the syringe body and the cap of the SCHOTT TOPPAC® infuse like a second skin and serves as an irreversible first-opening indication. This enables secure blister-free packaging and saves waste and costs. The label can also perform other protective functions of the blister, such as a gas barrier or UV and light protection. The enlarged label surface also offers more space for product information or drug color codes. Due to the combination of COC syringe with special cap and functional label with sealing function, the prefilled syringes can be packed in volume-optimized cardboard packaging made from 100 percent mono-material. This significantly reduces the CO2 footprint as well as costs along the value chain.

Digital First-Opening Indication and Traceability

The Cap-Lock label from Schreiner MediPharm with integrated RFID technology enables digitalization of the syringe. Thanks to a digital first-opening indication, the integrity of the prefilled SCHOTT TOPPAC® infuse can be read automatically. If the label has already been opened, a warning message appears. Using NFC, the end user can easily check this via smartphone. UHF RFID technology enables unique digital identification of each individual prefilled syringe so that it can be tracked seamlessly within the supply chain, for example for automated inventory management in hospitals. The RFID solution from Schreiner MediPharm has a special label design that protects the integrated chip from mechanical stress and impact during pharmaceutical production and ensures its functionality.
